About Ultimate Yatzy
Thirteen rounds, five dice, and a scorecard where each category can be used exactly once. That last rule is what makes Yatzy a strategy game rather than a dice-rolling one, because a mediocre roll still has to be written down somewhere, and deciding which category to sacrifice is the real choice.
This version keeps the traditional card intact, including the bonus for collecting enough of each number in the upper section and extra points if a second Yatzy turns up. A two-player option is included, and playing against somebody changes the maths considerably; chasing a long straight is sensible when you are behind and reckless when you are ahead.
How to play
Throw the dice, hold the ones you want to keep, and re-roll the rest before committing the result to a category. Repeat until all thirteen categories are filled. The larger total wins.
Controls
- Click the roll button to throw.
- Click individual dice to hold them out of the next throw.
- Click a row on the scorecard to lock the score in.
- Scorecard rows are small, so a computer screen reads more comfortably than a phone.
Tips
- Defend the upper section early; the bonus is usually worth more than a slim chance at a full house.
- Keep Chance in reserve as somewhere to dump a wasted roll rather than spending it on a decent one.
- Scoring a category as zero on purpose is often correct, so choose whichever one you are least likely to fill later.
