Solitaire mahjong has been around long enough that a version lives or dies on presentation and pacing. This one keeps things quiet — unhurried layouts, no clock breathing down your neck, and boards that unpeel layer by layer as matched pairs vanish.
The rule everyone forgets on their first board is that a tile must be free before it can be matched. Covered tiles are locked, and tiles hemmed in on both left and right cannot be taken even if their twin is sitting in plain view. That is where the strategy hides. Four identical tiles usually exist, and taking the wrong two can bury the other pair under a stack you have just made permanent.
How to play
Tap a free tile, then tap its identical partner, and the pair is removed. Uncover the layers beneath and keep pairing until the board is empty. Hints will point out an available match, and a shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles when nothing is left to take.
Controls
- Two taps or clicks per pair. Selected tiles lift slightly so you can see what is armed.
- Landscape suits the wide layouts, and the tiles are large enough to hit accurately on a phone screen.
Tips
- When all four copies of a design are free, clear all four. Leaving two behind is how boards deadlock.
- Take tiles from the tallest stack first — they unlock the most beneath them.
- Before spending a shuffle, check the edges of the board. Long horizontal rows hide free tiles that the eye slides past.
