How Match-3 Games Decide What Falls Next

Every match-3 player has had the same suspicion. You are two tiles from a level goal, the board stops offering anything useful, and it starts to feel personal.

Worth saying at the outset: we cannot see the code of the third-party games we publish, and neither can anyone else outside the studios that made them. So this post is not going to tell you what any specific game’s refill algorithm does. What it can do is set out what is observable from the outside, what follows logically from it, and — more usefully — which of your own habits actually change the outcome.

The refill is not purely random

You can establish this from the sofa. If a board topped itself up with genuinely random tiles, it would frequently drop three of a kind into place on its own, and boards would partially clear themselves without you touching them. That is not what happens. Cascades occur, but they occur as a consequence of a match you made, not spontaneously on a still board.

So the refill is doing at least one check: it is avoiding, or mostly avoiding, generating an immediate match in the new tiles. That single constraint explains a large part of how these games feel, because it means the board’s state after your move is not a fresh random draw — it is a fresh draw filtered by a rule you cannot see.

The second observable behaviour is what happens when no legal move exists. Games handle this in one of two ways: they reshuffle the board, or the run ends. Whichever a game does, it tells you the game is checking for solvability after every resolution, which is another decision being made on your behalf.

What we cannot tell you

Whether a given game adjusts its generosity based on how close you are to a goal is not something we can verify from the outside, and we are not going to assert it. What we can say is that the effect people describe — a board that dries up near the end of a level — is fully explained by something much more boring: you have cleared most of the tiles, so there are fewer of them, so there are fewer possible matches. Scarcity produces the same sensation as spite.

The one rule that actually matters

New tiles enter from the top and everything falls downward. Everything else follows from that.

Match low. A match near the bottom of the grid pulls the entire column above it down one step, which reshuffles far more of the board than a match at the top. It also gives any cascade more distance to travel and more chances to trigger. Match at the top and you have changed three tiles; match at the bottom and you have changed a column.

This is not theory. It is the single most repeated piece of advice across the guides on this shelf. Building charged gems low in Jewels Blitz Legends makes the refill cascade do work you did not pay for. In Fruit Match it is not even advice, it is a requirement — matched fruit falls physically toward a basket and can lodge on whatever is piled beneath it, so playing the board from the bottom is the only approach that does not create a traffic jam.

Take the whole chain. In 2248 Blast you drag a line through touching tiles of the same value, and a five-tile chain produces exactly the same result as a two-tile chain — one tile of the next value up. The numbers are identical; the board is not. The long chain removed three more tiles and triggered a much larger refill. Always extend a chain to its full length before releasing.

Cut, do not pop. Bubble shooters run the same logic upside down, since the pack hangs from the ceiling. One shot that severs a supporting cluster drops everything hanging below it, which is worth more than three careful colour matches. In Bubble Shooter Aura that difference is the whole game, and in Bubble Pop Legend it is scored directly, because the star rating goes to whoever finishes in the fewest shots rather than whoever clears the most tiles.

Build your high values into a corner. Merge grids punish a large tile stranded in the middle with nothing to pair with. 2248 Blast rewards compounding upward from an edge, and Merge Fruit — where nothing clears at all and the container simply fills — needs you to sort by size against one wall so merges cascade naturally instead of splitting the space into two cramped halves.

Games where nothing falls at all

A large part of the match-3 shelf does not refill, and the question does not apply to it.

Linking games are pure geometry. Jewel Link permits a connecting path at most three bends and Happy Fruit Link allows only two, which is why two gems sitting next to each other can be unreachable while a pair on opposite sides connects instantly. There is no luck to blame — the board is fully visible and every legal move is knowable. Your job is to open channels, not to hope.

Three-tile mahjong is inventory management. Grand Mahjong Connect holds your picked tiles in a bar until a third partner arrives, and anything without one occupies a slot permanently. Prism Match 3D does the same with seven tray slots and a rotatable structure that hides half the information from you. In both, the fatal mistake is collecting a tile before you have located a second copy of it.

The short version

The board is not against you, and it is also not neutral — it is filtered. You cannot influence the filter, but you can influence how much of the board each move disturbs, and that is where the difference between a good player and a lucky one actually sits.
