About Idle Trade Routes

The map is a bright ocean scattered with islands, and your involvement is almost entirely in the planning. Draw a route between two ports and a ship will run it, docking automatically at each end. The gold arrives whether you are watching or not, which makes this one of the calmer things in the simulation category.

Where it asks something of you is in route design. A fleet spread thin across many short hops behaves very differently from a few ships working long, high-value lanes, and captains and contracts both change the arithmetic. Optimisation, rather than action, is the whole game.

How to play

Connect islands to establish trade lines, then assign ships to run them. Profits fund new vessels, captains and fleet upgrades, and larger contracts open up as your operation grows. Earnings continue accumulating between sessions, so returning after a break gives you something to spend.

Controls

  • Mouse only — click to link ports, select ships and open the upgrade and contract panels.
  • No touchscreen build exists, so a desktop or laptop is the place for this.

Tips

  • Shorter lanes turn over faster but earn less per trip. Mix both rather than committing your whole fleet to one style.
  • Upgrade a ship already running a profitable route before buying a new hull for a route you have not tested.
  • Hire captains for your busiest lane first — the multiplier is worth more where traffic is heaviest.
